Since 1969, and every 3 years now, the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) gathers all its professional fellow Sommeliers members around the world to elect the Best Sommelier of the World. It's a fierce competition and each professional sommelier contestants has to get through their own continental contests to reach this world stage competition. Chateau Laguiole, as a prize for the Winners and best contestants, has been creating for years a customized Sommelier corkscrew, endorsed and designed by the winner, baring his engraved name. That's why every sommelier dream to get one day his name on his Chateau Laguiole opener. This series of Chateau Laguiole is thus named "Best Sommelier of the World".
In 1989, Serge Dubs, of France, won the contest and thus has become one of the few Best Sommeliers of the World, after being the European Champion in 1988. Made of Rosewood, a beautiful wood commonly used to make small precious objects as well as fine furniture and musical instruments, and a beautiful shiny and beveled brass at the top, there's the stamp of a magnificent stork engraved on one side. It is an import symbol and memory to Serge Dubs, Master Sommelier at "L'Auberge de l'ill", a notorious 3 stars Michelin restaurant in Alsace, France. And the symbol of Alsace is precisely the Stork. S. Dubs name is delicately engraved on the blade.
