Since 1969, and every 3 years now, the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) gathers all its professional fellow Sommeliers members around the world to elect the Best Sommelier of the World. It's a fierce competition and each professional sommelier contestants has to get through their own continental contests to reach this world stage competition. Chateau Laguiole, as a prize for the Winners and best contestants, has been creating for years a customized Sommelier corkscrew, endorsed and designed by the winner, baring his engraved name. That's why every sommelier dream to get one day his name on his Chateau Laguiole opener. This series of Chateau Laguiole is thus named "Best Sommelier of the World".
This piece was created to honor Giuseppe Vaccarini, of Italy, winner in 1978, in Lisbon, Portugal, of the Best Sommelier of the World contest, then former President of the A.S.I, the association organizing this competition. Mr. Vaccarini has been very involved in transmitting his knowledge by teaching at Universities and cooking schools around the world and writing books.
Its Chateau Laguiole is made of Lemonwood, or Degame (Calycophillum candidissimum), not to be confused with lemon trees. Lemonwood heartwood has this typical light brown, pale yellowish color, with a fine grain and slightly lustrous appearance. The lever is engraved of the Earth, and 1978.
